Today the active fish looked like this on the screen. (9-15-02)
| Notice how the two Crappie are 7' deep, in 9' of water and
hovering above the irregular bottom features. (The two larger fish in the
right hand window of this picture are Crappie while the smaller fish around
them are baitfish. The left hand window shows part of the same bunch
of fish but is zoomed in for more detail) |
After several days of mild weather the water has slowly started to cool
and this brought the Crappie out of the deeper water in search of food just
as it does every year before the colder weather sets in. The deepest
part of this lake is about 30' deep and is only about 150 yards from where I
found the active fish today. They followed the main creek channel that
runs from the deepest water in the lake to where a smaller creek channel
breaks off and heads into a small cove. The mouth of this cove where the
picture above was taken, also where I enjoyed catching and releasing 30 or
so Crappie ranging from 8" to 10" on a picture perfect afternoon with little
wind and a comfortable 75 degrees!
The area holding fish was 15 yards wide and 50 yards long. They
were scattered throughout the area, but they were all near a small stump or
irregular bump on the bottom that was otherwise wide open. Most of the
fish were holding 2' off the bottom in 8' to 10' of water and within 20
yards either side of where the small creek channel made it's way into the
mouth of the cove. Today I caught most of the fish on yellow and white
colored jigs. Most of the fish were caught with a vertical jig
presentation while I "S-L-O-W-L-Y" worked through the area with my trolling
motor. In the bottom picture, you will see my favorite 12' rods
hanging over the side of the boat as I admire one of the Crappie I met on a
nice Sunday afternoon!

I'll see you at the lake!
